The play's protagonist is a young mongoose named Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. During a severe flood, a rushing current carries him far from his mother. Upon awakening, Rikki-Tikki-Tavi finds himself in the garden of a large house inhabited by a British family. While exploring this new environment, he befriends a friendly bird named Darcy, but at the same time encounters danger—the cunning cobra Nagaina. Rikki-Tikki-Tavi later learns that the cobras are plotting to kill the people who inhabit the house. Recognizing the threat, the brave mongoose decides to defend his new friends and engages in a deadly battle with Nagaina.
