1. Electrocardiography (ECG) is a quick test that records the electrical activity of the heart and displays it as a graph (cardiogram).

• What it shows: rhythm disturbances (arrhythmia), heart rate, signs of overload of the heart chambers or ischemia (lack of oxygen).
• When needed: in case of palpitations, heart palpitations, chest pain, shortness of breath, or during an annual check-up.
• How it works: The procedure lasts 5-7 minutes. Electrodes are placed on your chest and limbs while you lie quietly.

2. Echocardiography (EchoCG or ultrasound of the heart) is an ultrasound examination that allows the doctor to see the heart from the inside in real time.

• What it shows: the size of the heart chambers, the thickness of the walls, the functioning of the valves, the strength of the heart muscle and the volume of blood ejected.
• Why is this important: Echocardiography can detect structural changes that a regular electrocardiogram cannot detect (for example, heart defects or fluid in the pericardial sac).
• How it's done: The doctor uses an ultrasound transducer. The procedure is painless, lasts about 20 minutes, and requires no preparation.
