At the start of the game, each player receives three recipes, one of which they choose, along with five ingredient cards. In addition to common ingredients, the log contains rare, bonus, and special ingredients. Players take turns adding ingredients to their culinary masterpiece, trading or matching cards.

On your turn, you can only perform one of the following actions:

• Add an ingredient: Play one card from your hand in front of you.
• Draw two cards: Take ingredients from the top of the deck.
• Play a special ingredient: apply the effect and discard a card. Toss your opponents some pepper, negate a negative effect with sour cream, or get new cards from the market using ginger, cinnamon, olive oil, or paprika.
• Exchange ingredients: Replace the extra ingredient in your hand with the one needed for your recipe at the market.
• Discard excess cards and replenish the market.

Once one player has collected all the necessary ingredients for their borscht, their opponents get the final turn, without using any special cards against that player. Players count victory points for all cards on their collected ingredients and the recipe card for the borscht they've cooked. Points are subtracted for ingredients that shouldn't be in their recipe. The player with the most victory points wins.
