Epoxy resin. What is it?

Epoxy compounds are usually used for minor repairs of plastic and metal surfaces. The liquid compound, initially divided into two fractions, can be stored for a long time, and when interacting, it quickly passes from the liquid to the solid phase. Hardened surfaces are easy to machine - cutting, drilling, grinding, but at the same time they stably retain the originally given shape. The epoxy known to the average person is used when significant strength and rigidity must be given to lost fragments (including bodywork during car repairs).

The artistic use of epoxy compounds is dictated by the same property - polymer resins after hardening retain the originally given shape and surface quality, and paints added to the transparent base do not fade or lose brightness over time. A remarkable property of the material is hardening without significant shrinkage, since drying occurs not as a result of evaporation of part of the composition (as in the case of varnishes), but solely due to the chemical reaction between the components. Therefore, the work retains its original volume, and if the requirements of the technology are met - and the shape originally given by the master.

Not every epoxy resin is suitable for creating paintings. You will need two-component materials, specifically created for creative artistic activity. Special resin for Resin Art thickens as a result of mixing with a hardener, which gives optimal viscosity, protects the initially created painting from spreading, and does not form whitish stripes when drying.

Both components are mixed in plastic cups, preferably after painting. In small containers, there is less chance of the resin boiling and saturating it with air bubbles, which affects the final quality of the work. Special dyes are added, following the proportions specified in the instructions (otherwise the composition will harden poorly). Additionally, pigment powders (silver, bronze, gold), luminophores (glow in the dark) and glitters (spangles of various sizes and shapes) are used. Swarovski crystals and other finishing decorative elements are firmly fixed and held on the thickening resin.
